As stated previously, the most important aspect of making a connection with others is listening. 

When listening, there are 2 key skills required:

  • Non-verbal: If you’re on a video call, show positive body language when they are talking. Convey warmth and acceptance.  
  • Verbal: Facilitate the conversation, don’t lead it. Often when opening up, people just want someone that will listen to them. 

Avoid:

  • Leading the conversation
  • Diagnosing them with a mental health problem
  • Being judgemental
  • Giving unsolicited advice
