What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is felt by all of us. We experience anxiety when we feel threatened or under stress.

At the moment, our anxiety levels may be elevated due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It is important that we don’t fight these feelings, as the anxiety is likely to increase. To keep your anxiety levels under control, look to implement the self-care strategies (in the previous section).

Anxiety is a feeling of
unease, worry or fear.

Anxiety can last for
minutes, months or years.

Feelings of anxiety can
range from mild to severe.

The worry is about situations
that could arise in the future.

When Anxiety Becomes a Problem:

You may feel worried or anxious before public speaking, seeing your GP or a job interview. This is a normal reaction to a difficult or challenging situation.

While everybody experiences feelings of anxiety that are not problematic, for others, it can develop into a disorder.

However, anxiety can become a problem if it is:

  • Persistent – usually lasting longer than 2 weeks
  • Negatively impacting your daily life
